The Development of a Culture System to Study the Growth and the Interaction between Dermal Papilla Cells and Hair Matrix Keratinocytes

Research Summary

The dermal papilla (DP) plays essential roles in hair follicle morphogenesis and cycling. However, characterization and/or propagation of human dermal papilla cells have been unsatisfactory because of the lack of efficient isolation methods and the loss of innate characteristics in vitro. Therefore, we are developing an in vitro culture system that allow normal growth of dermal papilla cells without losing their inductive ability and their interaction with neighbouring cells in the hair matrix such as keratinocytes. This culture system will provide the core for a future study of implanting human follicular cell to restore hair loss.
