Tracking units (22,24) detect spatial position and/or orientation of respective probe unit and insertion unit with respect to tissue region, and outputs respective tracking signals. A processing unit (20) receives planned insertion path based on first tracking signals, and compares second tracking signals with planned insertion path.

ADVANTAGE – The system allows the surgeon to check whether the insertion path is drilled straight corresponding to planned path of insertion, The surgeon is enabled to make immediate correction while detecting the deviations so that the risk of misplacement of surgical implant during the surgical procedure is avoided. The complexity of receiving the tracking signal is avoided.
